Chicken-led psychological horror game
Saborus is a premium action game from High Room Studio and is a third-person horror adventure centering around a chicken protagonist. In it, players will guide the chicken toward escape from a dark and disturbing slaughterhouse while avoiding being captured by human pursuers to prevent a grim and deadly fate.
From a certain perspective, Saborus seems like a relatively simple game to play; however, there’s more to it than just that. The chicken you control cannot engage in combat and can only hide, run, and sneak past enemies. It’s a thrilling stealth-focused game that surely keeps you on your toes.
Fowl play
This game takes place in a titular Saborus, a slaughterhouse with conveyor belts, cages, and other machinery designed to slaughter innocent animals. You are a chicken destined to be killed and butchered, but you manage to get out of your cage and rush for the exit to escape. Be wary of anyone and anything trying to pursue or kill you, including suited workers, drones, and hostile animals.
There is no combat involved and you cannot fight back. The only way to survive is to rely on your stealth skills. You may be small, but you can use that to your advantage, since you can easily hide under objects or even slip through vents to get past some areas. The unnerving atmosphere and fear of getting caught certainly make it difficult to think and plan your next move.
Along the way, there will also be environmental and platforming puzzles to solve to further your escape and avoid capture. However, it’s a bit of a gruesome journey, as you get to witness all kinds of horrific scenes and images of bloody butchery and dismemberment, definitely not for those sensitive to morbid imagery. Although this does enrich the horror experience by providing a sense of hopelessness and fear.
Chicken McMurder
All in all, Saborus is one strange and disturbing psychological horror experience about a chicken trying to escape getting butchered, and it surprisingly works. The goal is pretty straightforward: avoid capture, solve puzzles, and escape with your life. While the concept is simple, the unsettling atmosphere makes it tense, and the fact that you can’t fight and only run certainly adds to the challenge.
